Open Collaboration in World Missions

"Open Collaboration is the unavoidable future of the global church"
(and this is a really good thing!)

This is a presentation arguing that the future of world missions and the equipping of the global church to grow in discipleship involves believers everywhere in the world collaborating openly to create unrestricted discipleship resources.

The slides for the presentation are available above, or you can download a PDF of the slides.

Topics covered in this presentation

Part 1: How we got here

Covers the rise of the Internet and mobile phone technology, gives examples of open collaboration including Linux, Wikipedia and the MATLAB coding competition.

Part 2: Defining "open collaboration"

What is "open collaboration" and how is it different from "crowd-sourcing" and other related concepts. Open collaboration may be viewed as an endpoint on a spectrum of collaboration from "closed" to "open".

Part 3: What makes "open collaboration" work?

What factors contribute to "open collaboration" and what factors prevent it? Includes case studies from Marketocracy and InnoCentive, also addresses Intellectual Property Rights and why open-licensed content is a key requirement for open collaboration.

Part 4: Where do we go from here?

(Hint: doing nothing and continuing in world missions as we always have is not an option!) Asks this question:

"Are we ready for a self-selecting, massively distributed network of indigenous believers that collaboratively create their own discipleship & educational resources using the technology they are already using (e.g. mobile phones)?"
